'All Day' is a single by American hip hop recording artist Kanye West. It features American rapper Theophilus London, Canadian rapper Allan Kingdom, and English musician Paul McCartney. The song was produced by West, Puff Daddy, French Montana, Velous, Charlie Heat, Mike Dean, Noah Goldstein, Plain Pat, Travis Scott, Allen Ritter, and Mario Winans. Initially leaked in August 2014 after being announced for release as a single by West, he debuted it with a performance at the 2015 Brit Awards. On March 3, the song was released for digital download as a non-album single. It contains an interpolation from 'Dance with Me' by Jamaican singer Noel Ellis. The lyrics center around West winning in life, with him boasting about being successful and West compared certain lyrics to the work of Jay-Z. The music video was announced in March 2015, premiered in July and released in February 2016. The song was met with generally positive reviews from music critics. At the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, it was nominated for both Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance.
Background and recording[edit]

'All Day' was announced for release as a single by West in a July 2014 interview with Zach Baron of GQ.[1] West spoke about the recording process behind it in the interview, telling Baron: 'I would have came in with, like, whatever I come in with. But the balance of a meal is that when people walk in, they want water first.'[1] The next month, a snippet of the song leaked online.[2] Melissa Locker of Time called the snippet 'a promising hint at things to come.'[2] 'All Day' was debuted live by West at the 2015 Brit Awards on February 25.[3]Rolling Stone provided the first official stream of the track.[4] It was scrapped from the track list of West's seventh studio album The Life of Pablo (2016).[5]
The track's creation started with Velous, who revealed in a 2015 interview with MTV that he made the skeleton of the instrumental on a friend's couch while watching Saturday Night Live in the summer of 2014.[6] In reference to the creation process, Velous stated: 'I worked on that and I had the main part of it, I already had the skeleton of it [and] it was for my big bro French Montana.'[6] Velous explained why it ultimately became a West track and not a French Montana track, saying: 'I guess Kanye was rocking with it, so he gave it to Kanye and they added some more. Keepvid music free serial key. Kanye went in, French added some stuff to it and I co-produced it with my big bro.'[6] This song was one of three collaborations between McCartney and West to be released.[7] In April 2015, after the track had officially been released, a demo leaked online with co-writer Kendrick Lamar rapping in it.[8]
Composition[edit]
'All Day' includes elements reminiscent of West's sixth studio album Yeezus and incorporates some from drill music.[9] The melody of it is built around McCartney's whistling from a re-recording of a song written by him in 1969 that was inspired by a Pablo Picasso painting of a guitarist, which is supposedly titled 'Two Fingers'.[10][4] The bassline of Reggae singer Noel Ellis' 2006 recording 'Dance With Me' is sampled.[11] The song is about winning, with it seeing West brag about his success, differentiating from his usual dwelling on the struggles that he went through to ultimately achieve success.[12] A number of things already commonly known about West are referenced by him in the song, such as him being from Chicago and having an obsession with his wife.[13] The phrase 'All day, nigga' is repeatedly used by West within the song.[14] A voice box melody is included at the beginning of it.[15] West viewed the lyrics 'All day, nigga, it's Ye, nigga/Shopping for the winter, it's just May, nigga/Ball so hard, man, this shit cray, nigga/You ain't getting money unless you got eight figures' as sounding like content that fellow rapper Jay-Z 'would have said.'[1] West shouts 'Get low!' during the outro.[9] The ending section of the song contains a sample of McCartney's whistling on 'Two Fingers', as confirmed by a representative for West.[4][10]
Critical reception[edit]
The song received generally positive reviews from music critics. Jayson Greene of Pitchfork dubbed it as 'an odd hybrid' and elaborated, writing: 'Kanye's rapping harder, faster, sharper than ever: Years and years into his evolving style, he's fashioned his voice into something dull and jagged at once, a hacked-off piece of jetliner assaulting the beat. Download game critical ops apk data. Here, he seethes, collapsing all the spaces in between the words until he sounds like James Brown imitating a tommy gun. He fires off insults like sparks from sputtering livewires, and his verses breeze past, blessedly free of 'O-bamination' clunkers, showing him at his finest and most vivid: When he's convulsing.'[9] Kory Grow of Rolling Stone wrote that 'the song shows off its triumphant synth line and bouncy beat, as well as West's one-liners like, 'You a fake Denzel like the Allstate nigga/If you run in to me, better have Allstate with you' and guest Allan Kingdom’s soulful vocals.'[4] Andrew Barber, Brendan Klinkenberg and Ross Scarano of Complex claimed that the song 'was a dope single but failed to connect the way 'Gold Digger' or 'Stronger' or 'Slow Jamz' had.'[16] It was nominated for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance at the 2015 Grammy Awards, though ultimately won neither of the awards.[17] At the 2016 International Dance Music Awards, 'All Day' earned a nomination for Best Rap/Hip Hop/Trap Dance Track and ultimately lost to French DJ David Guetta's single 'Hey Mama'.[18]
Music video[edit]
As soon as the track was released in March 2015, it was announced that West would release a Steve McQueen-directed music video.[19] In July, this music video was premiered online.[20]
He officially released a music video for the song on February 22, 2016 that was directed by Steve McQueen, as planned upon the single's release, and featured a song titled 'I Feel Like That' being played after 'All Day' in the nine-minute video.[21] The video features West as the only star in it and is filmed in only one room for the entirety of it.[22] 'I Feel Like That' sees West go deep into his issues with mental health, which he also references in the songs 'U Mad' and 'FML'.[23] The track didn't end up on West's album The Life of Pablo that was released within both the same year and month – it also wasn't spoken of by West or his crew later in 2016, so any plans he had to release it as a single or place it on any album were believed to have been scrapped, despite a release being anticipated.[24] When West released his eighth studio album Ye in 2018, 'I Feel Like That' was not one of the tracks on it, furthering any speculation that its release has been scrapped.[25]
Commercial performance[edit]
When 'All Day' debuted at number 18 on the UK Singles Chart, it became West's second top-20 single of 2015; 'FourFiveSeconds' peaked at number three in March 2015.[26] It achieved the certification of Silver in the UK on January 5, 2018.[27] Additionally, the song and 'FourFiveSeconds' became his first top-20 singles in the United States since 2013's 'Bound 2'.[28]'All Day' debuted at number 15 on the US Billboard Hot 100, selling 140,000 downloads in its first week and this lead to it entering atop of the US Rap Digital Songs chart.[29] The song stood as West's first single to debut at number one on the chart and followed 'Clique' as his second to reach the position.[29] By reaching number 6 on the US BillboardHot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, the song marked West's 22nd top ten single on the chart.[29] It was certified Gold in the US on July 28, 2015.[30] That same month, fellow West and McCartney collaboration 'Only One' achieved the same certification in the country.[31]

West debuted the song live at the 2015 Brit Awards on February 25 with a number of US rappers and UK grime MC's, including the likes of Boy Better Know, Novelist, Q-Tip, Krept & Konan, Stormzy, Allan Kingdom, Theophilus London and Vic Mensa.[3] During the performance, Allan Kingdom shot flames into the air with a flamethrower.[32] West was confirmed to perform last minute, the day before the awards took place.[33] However, his performance was repeatedly muted throughout most of the track for those watching on television due to the extreme explicit language featured within the song's lyrics, with the usage of nigga being repeatedly rapped live on ITV.[34] The performance drew mixed reactions from the crowd, with presenters Ant & Dec joking about it afterwards, and divided opinions on social media; some criticising West's performance and some criticising how ITV dealt with the issue.[35][36] The usage of strong language sparked over 100 complaints received by Ofcom as a result of it.[37]NME reported that West rapped 'nigga' a total of 14 times.[12] Velous praised West for the performance, claiming that he 'had to watch it like 16 times to relive that moment.'[6]
He performed the song live during the first-quarter timeout of the 2015 NBA Playoffs in the court.[38] West performed the track at Glastonbury with a sample of the Noel Ellis track 'Dance With Me' used as the outro.[39] The track was part of his setlist for West's first concert on the Saint Pablo Tour in August 2016.[40]
